Economic wellbeing is essential for a healthy society, but it is important to remember that if the environment fails then the economy will fail. The eminent economist Herman E. Daily summed it up elegantly when he said, “The economy is a wholly owned subsidiary of the environment, not the reverse.” Something that so many of us, especially those in positions of power, seem to forget.
