Arguably there has never been pure free trade, most countries have had some sort of protectionist measures in place, but they have largely been limited and associated with quid pro quo deals with other countries, free trade being much more prevalent. However Trump’s protectionism crusade is threatening a return to the severe protectionist measures of the 1930’s and all its associated worldwide economic stresses. Economically we are indeed skating on thin ice.
