THE HIGHER AND LOWER TAXATION ROADS

I drew this cartoon in response to a series of reports about the poor state of our roads. The fact is that Federal, State and Local governments have a myriad of competing funding demands but they only have a finite funds cake to cut up.  It seems to me that Australians expect European style services and infrastructure but with an American style level of taxation.  You can’t have both. In recent years numerous economists have called for a complete overall of the tax system, ostensively to make it fairer, but the hidden message is that if we want to live in a country with well-maintained infrastructure then we are all going to have to pay more tax.
